Hypermobility &
Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome
Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (HSD) and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) are a group of connective tissue disorders that can significantly impact daily life. These conditions affect the body's collagen, leading to a wide range of symptoms, including joint hypermobility (joints that extend beyond the normal range), skin hyperextensibility, and tissue fragility. This can result in joint pain, dislocations, subluxations, chronic fatigue, digestive issues, and a variety of other challenges.
The invisible nature of these conditions often leads to misunderstanding and difficulty communicating the extent of their impact.
This can create feelings of isolation and frustration. While medical management is crucial, occupational therapy plays a vital role in empowering individuals to manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life.
Occupational therapists are uniquely positioned to help individuals with HSD/EDS develop personalized strategies to navigate the complexities of these conditions. By addressing both the physical and psychological aspects, OTs help individuals regain a sense of control, improve overall well-being, and participate in meaningful activities.
Here are some ways our OTs can support you in managing HSD/EDS:
Teach techniques to protect joints from excessive strain and modify activities to reduce the risk of injury and pain. This may include ergonomic adjustments, assistive devices, and pacing strategies.
Develop strategies to balance activity and rest, helping to prevent overexertion and manage fatigue.
Provide education on pain management techniques, including relaxation techniques, mindfulness, and coping strategies to manage chronic pain.
Address sensory sensitivities that may accompany HSD/EDS, such as sensitivities to touch, light, or sound.
Help individuals develop coping strategies to manage the emotional impact of living with a chronic condition and empower them to advocate for their needs in various settings.
Recommend and train individuals in the use of assistive devices and adaptive equipment to enhance independence and participation in daily activities.
Suggest modifications to the home or work environment to minimize physical demands and create a more supportive space.
Offer guidance on establishing healthy routines, including sleep hygiene, stress management, and healthy eating habits to support overall well-being.
